Savant Systems

Wow, doesn't time fly when you're having fun!

We are having a busy time at the Digital Domain HQ at the moment. We are just compiling an update to our website which will have a page dedicated to Savant Systems, the worlds only Apple based control system.

They have also just released some exciting new products including an IP based phone system and also fibre-optic transmitters for HD video distribution.

If you haven't seen what this new and exciting product is all about, take a look at their website. They have some fantastic videos on there which details what the product is all about.

While you are in a browsing mood, also take a look at the new look Artcoustic website. This features all of their new products and a gallery of installations which is totally inspiring.

If your requirements are a little more modest, then we can also offer a system called Bitwise Controls which enables you to control your system from an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. This is a tremendous and cost effective solution, ideal for single room installations or home cinema's.

We have completed a fairly sizeable installation in Guildford using Bitwise to control the Sky HD and Blu-ray player around the house and Sonos for the distributed audio.

We are now also starting to put together our first brochure (testing my design abilities to the limit) which we are really excited about. Watch this space for more details.

Thats all for now, I will be back soon to update you on the website and the brochure.

Have fun and let's hope that we finally get some sort of summer.

Down South

This last month has mainly been spent working in Guildford on a lovely project for a private client. We were tasked with designing and installing a distributed audio system, data networks, phone system, HD video distribution and also a high performance home cinema system in the clients lounge.

The main part of the brief was that the client wanted the whole operation to be as simple as possible so a degree to automation was required to take away the onerous task of selecting sources and sources and controlling the equipment from the plethora of remote controls that a system like this contains.

We looked at that part of the system first and decided to use the Bitwise control units. These are very clever devices that sit on the network and allow the whole system to be operated from either iPhones or iPads. This is very cost effective in comparison with traditional programmable remote controls and offers the user a great experience.

The music distribution was taken care of using the old faithful of Sonos. This is such a tried and tested system, so simple in principal and an extremely elegant and intuitive system for the user. Most importantly, it just works and has proven to be exceptionally reliable in all circumstances.

The lounge/cinema room needed to be of high performance, but aesthetically pleasing also and our goto company for speakers in this respect is Artcoustic. We chose to use the new DF65-50 6-3 SL as the front left and right and we had a custom C1 SL centre channel made to exact match the width of the TV. Visually, the end result is excellent and we have a very happy client. The rear speakers are Definitive Technology in-ceiling units to minimise the visual impact on the room and they have also supplied the SuperCube II Subwoofer which is a real powerhouse and a great match for the Artcoustic system.

For the cinema hardware, alongside the Panasonic 42VT30 plasma screen, we are using the fantastic Anthem MRX300 AV Receiver. This is one of the very finest products around for the money and I had the privilege of trying it at home for a while and it was stunning. Not least due to their world-leading room correction software, this works better than any other system I have used and the results certainly speak for themselves.

The source components being used are the obligatory Sky HD box and an Oppo BDP-93 Blu-ray player. This has a tremendous level of performance and specification for the price, great picture quality and has received some excellent reviews. Also, a major benefit of this unit, is that it loads discs quicker than almost any other player I have used.

Pictures of the installation will follow soon once we have done the final handover with the client, but it has so far, been an interesting project and most importantly, an absolute pleasure on which to work.

Thanks for reading.

Installations and presentations

Monday of this week was spent in Cheshire, completing and installation of an HD video over CAT5e solution from our friends at rAM Technology. Their solution works exceptionally well, able to support 1080P and audio over a pair of CAT5e cables along with full IR control. The receiving units which are placed at the display end are powered directly over the CAT5e cable as well. We were using a 4x4 full matrix switcher, but they also offer an 8x8 unit along with a whole host of other HDMI products.

Up early again this morning to set up for my 10 minute presentation to my BNI chapter. I decided that I would do a live demonstration on the Sonos system using the iPad as a controller and streaming audio from my MacBook Pro. Everyone was very impressed and thought that the system was a great product and offers real value for money.

I could not finish off without showcasing the exceptional Savant AV products and I ran through their great iPad demo app featuring the demonstration suite in New York. If you get the chance, check out their feed on YouTube and see some of their products in action.

I can guarantee if any of our BNI members win the lottery tonight, I will sell a few of those systems.

Tomorrow brings a 7 zone Sonos installation for a local residential client, it's always a pleasure to install and the final demo to the client always brings a smile to their faces.

Finally, on Thursday, I am surveying a new property for an auction house as we have been tasked with supplying the IT infrastructure, phone systems, broadband and office furniture. It promises to be a great project and we are looking forward to a long relationship with Silverstone Auctions

Well that's it for now, I hope that I won't leave it so long before my next blog.

Have fun

Jason

Easter Week

Another busy week so far, albeit a bit of a mixed bag. It started on a beautiful Monday morning with a few simple jobs resolving an issue with an aerial distribution system and several phone extensions in a clients apartment.

This was then followed with a BNI meeting in Droitwich and then our usual Royal Spa chapter meeting on Tuesday morning. I am glad to say that it went exceptionally well, we had some great visitors and plenty of referrals and business was passed. I am also pleased to say that we have had a new member application as well.

This morning I have been running in a new HDMI cable in a clients home-cinema in Warwickshire as he is upgrading his projector the the new Runco LS-5 1080P DLP unit. This is an amazing projector and will give a massive upgrade on his current unit. This will be using his new Oppo BDP-93 Blu-Ray player as a source component. Once we have installed this, the guys from Pulse Marketing will be coming up to carry out the ISF calibration to get the very best from the system.

In between visiting clients, I have been spending a large amount of time loading lots of new software onto my MacBook Pro. We are currently going through the Savant accreditation process to become one of their select dealers in the UK and we have made a significant investment in the many related software products required to become a dealer.

As I have mentioned before, this is a very exciting product, not just for us but for the industry as a whole and I can't wait for the 3 day training course in late May and I am looking forward to installing our first system.

Well, that's it for now and I hope you all have a fantastic easter weekend.

Busy, busy, busy

It has been some time since my last blog and this is due, in no small part, to the fact that I have been quite busy.

Alongside the day to day requests from clients to move Sky boxes, hang a flat screen, sort out IT issues, install WiFi networks and so on, I was privileged enough to be asked to undertake the role of Chapter Director in my local BNI - an opportunity I have grabbed with both hands.

For those of you who are not aware of BNI, this is a World Wide organisation that meet each week over breakfast to help promote our own businesses and pass referrals to one another. For more information, visit their website: http://www.bni-europe.com/uk/

Exciting news on the product front. Digital Domain were approached by one of our Distributors to attend a training overview of a tremendous new control system based around Apple products. This is really leading edge technology and the marketplace has not seen anything like this before. To be able to control any aspect of your home such as HVAC, lighting, Home Cinema, music and movies all from your iPhone or iPad is not unique, but to be able to do this with such ease, speed and a completely intuitive GUI is!

This amazing new product is from Savant AV and their website is http://www.savantav.com/

Check out their videos and products and for something uber-cool, have a look at their TrueImage technology: http://www.savantav.com/technology_truimage_gesturetouch.aspx

Thats it for now, and I will be blogging more often - mental note to devote more time to letting you all know what we are doing.

Latest Installation from Digital Domain

We have just completed an installation for a private client based in the Cheshire area and I have put the pictures on our Flickr site for you to have a look at.

The client requested audio and HD video distributed to 3 areas within the house, Lounge, Kitchen and Family Room and Master Bedroom, Dressing Area and En-Suite with the addition of a surround system in the Lounge. The audio is handled by a Sonos system comprising 2 x ZP120 zone players and 1 x ZP90 for the Lounge which is connected to a Denon AV receiver.

In the En-suite, we installed a 26" TileVision TV fed by Sky HD and the audio from this shares the same in-ceiling speaker as the Sonos system. An electronic switching device automatically routes the audio from the relevant source to the speaker.

Our Flickr site can be found at the following address:-

If you would like any more information about this installation or anything else that you see on our website, please do not hesitate to contact me.

New Installation

We invite you to have a look at our Flickr site and view a recent installation of a Home Cinema system at a private client's home.

They had a bespoke media wall constructed and we installed a 50" LCD screen along with a Definitive Technology SSA50 LCR speaker and Definitive Technology Mythos Gem surrounds.

This was all driven by a Denon AV amplifier with the final finishing touch being a Rako lighting control system
